Department of History

About

In 1963, the Department of History began its journey as a small department in Herambachandra College, popularly known for its highly reputed Commerce Department. It has remained small for almost fifty years not in terms of academic resources, but in terms of students’ strength.

Now the department has a rich collection of books in the library and dedicated faculty. The teachers of the Department regularly participate in seminars and conferences at the national and international levels and endeavour to share their under standing and views to others. The teachers of the department devote themselves to nurture the potentialities of the students. The cordial teacher-student relationship has made our endeavour successful.

To keep students updated, Seminars and special lectures are held round the year to familiarize them with the wide world of History and to make study exciting. The department motivates students to take part in  extention lectures, educational survey, seminars and conferences.  Senior students actively take part in explaining historical topics to their juniors. The students are encouraged to explore history while visiting different historical places in their departmental excursions. The Department feels proud to find some of the students are  well-established in media and corporate world, in education and research. Apart from academic pursuit, students also individually render valuable service to society by distributing books and clothes to underprivileged children.

The department plans innovative teaching and cotinuous evaluation through out the year. The departmental journal "Cross Current" is published jointly with the Department of Economics almost regularly.

Being teachers of History, we have faith in tradition. The teachers strongly believe that traditional chalk and talk method in teaching creates an emotional bonding between teachers and students. However, history does not speak about past or tradition only. Contemporary history is a very popular term in historical parlance. So, the department is gradually trying to adopt the latest technology based and interactive teaching methods which are not only modern but also attractive to the students. We have also brought some changes in internal evaluation method to make it student friendly. The ultimate goal of the department is to inspire our students to ask “What is History?”
