Department of Economics

About

From the historical Perspective, the Department of Economics of Heramba Chandra college did not have any identity independent of the Commerce Department. The former was clubbed with the latter as Economics was treated as just a paper or two in the Commerce curriculum (Honours and General) under Calcutta University. The Department of Economics started its own journey from 1999 when the College was permitted to teach Honours courses in Economics according to the curriculum of the Calcutta University. From the very beginning of our journey, the motto of the teachers is to inculcate the interest in the subject among the students. The small sizes of the classes made it possible to attempt. The student-teacher relation is very cordial. Our venture is not only to confine the students within curriculum, but also to guide them to explore the subject itself.

So, the department made aSpecial Platform for Research in Economics and Development (SPREAD), a platform where students can apply their theoretical knowledge in real world through conducting surveys, presenting papers, exchanging the views with others through organizing seminars/workshops.

The Department publishes two Journals; (i) Budding Economist, containing the highly appreciated Economics Projects by the 3rd Year students and (ii) Cross Current: Departmental Journal, jointly published with Department of History. Students are encouraged to participate in various inter-college competitions and events in Economics and several times they have proved their excellence. They themselves also organize and participate in various intra-college programmes. Excursions to different places are organized on regular basis.

Three valuable assets of our department are rich and extensive collection of Reference Books in the Library, very efficient and dedicated faculty and talented and enterprising students.

Though we emphasize on all-round development of the students, intensive studies are not their neglected zone. Almost each year some of them obtain 1st class marks in University Examinations. Most of the students pursue post graduation in Economics/ Management. Those who want to  enter the job market after graduation, get opportunities for placement offered by different companies through campus interview as well as their own initiatives.

But, however, we do admit that all stories are not success stories. There are students who do not excel or fail to perform satisfactorily, we stand by them and trying to bring the best in them. Class attendance is a must for such guidance. In 2018, we are going to introduce student centric Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Hope, this may reduce the rate of failure if students can choose option on the basis of their interest and potential.
