About

The Department of Geography of Heramba Chandra College was established in 2000. However, the teaching-learning process in the discipline of Geography started in this college much ago in connection with the Department of Commerce. Teachers of Geography were then engaged in teaching Resource Studies as a part of the B.Com. Syllabi. Finally, honours and general courses in Geography were introduced in 2000. Presently the department has six faculties along with one laboratory attendant and one laboratory bearer. The intake capacity of the department is twenty five. Admission is strictly controlled on the basis of merit.

The seminar library needs a special mention, containing a good variety of both text and reference books. The department tries to provide with easy access of these books to both students and teachers. The department is well equipped with a GIS Laboratory with adequate number of computers. The department has a rich collection of maps, survey instruements, aerial photographs and satellite imageries as well as other necessary equipments. The ICT enabled classrooms are often used for teaching purpose. Field excursions to geographically significant locations are carried as a part of the curriculum. Group discussions, combining teacher’s presentation and student’s interaction, is often practiced in the classes. The method of microteaching is also followed. These allow students to go beyond their normal boundaries and generate natural curiosity among them.

Teachers in this department are actively engaged in various research based activities. They frequently participate in workshops, seminars and conferences. They often arrange special invited lectures on various aspects of the discipline for benefit of the students and the teachers as well. The department has been planning to publish a wall magazine and a journal very soon.

The department runs on a very cordial and sincere relation among teachers, students and non-teaching staffs. Teacher are not only engaged in completing the scheduled curriculum as defined by the University of Calcutta, but also the department takes initiatives to motivate students to carry forward their higher academics and to prepare them for entering the market of employment.Ex-students of this department are successfully engaged in various professions including teaching activities. However, the basic idea is to generate deep thinking and innovativeness in geographical studies. The ultimate aim is to rethink the ‘man-environment relationship’, the eternal search among the geographers.
