7. The importance of the topic: There have been various social, cultural, economic and political reasons behind tribal movements in India. These movements mainly signify the protest against the exploitation of these people and the entire forest ecosystem. Through the indomitable protests, the tribal leaders have brought about seminal changes in the lives of tribals across the country, and they have played a leading role in the promotion, protection and conservation of the environment through their traditional practices. Thus, they have been the torch-bearers of sustainable development. To honour the contribution of the tribal community to the nation, the government has declared November 15 as Janajatiya Gaurav Divas. Recognising the importance of tribal people and their role in nation-building, the Constitution made special provisions for the protection of tribal culture and the development of Scheduled Tribes. With this seminar we have tried to bring forward the culture, heritage and history of tribals and also those unsung heroes who sacrificed their lives to make a new nation.
